She said she was fine. Twice.
Mom told me she was βfineβ twice on the phone that week, so I ordered it for her birthday without asking. She left it in the box for four days. Then my sister caught her wearing it in the recliner during her 7 o'clock game show and sent me a picture. She still says she's fine. She also asked me where I got it, for my aunt.

Tailgate, fifteen minutes, then dinner
Electrician, 22 years, a lot of it on a ladder with my arms over my head. I keep the wrap in the truck. I park in the driveway, engine off, sit on the tailgate and strap it on. Fifteen minutes, it switches itself off, I go inside and eat. My wife calls it my tailgate time. Took me two tries to get the strap right over a work shirt.

Mug in one hand, controller in the other
Behind the back is a reach I don't try anymore. My bra gets hooked in front and spun around, and that's my mornings. Evenings are mine. Wrap on, mug of tea in one hand, the other on the controller to pick the warmth. Fifteen minutes and it switches itself off. My old heating pad slid off every time I reached for the mug. This one stays put.

Part of going to bed now
It goes on at 10:15, sitting on the edge of the bed with the lamp on. Fifteen minutes, it switches itself off, I take it off, put it on the nightstand, brush my teeth, lights out. The first week I kept fiddling with the strap. Now I don't decide anything, it's just the order things happen in. My husband says I'm on a schedule, like the dog.

He's in the spare room. 9:30 is ours.
Dale has been in the spare room since spring. I toss and turn, he's a light sleeper, and neither of us wanted to talk about it. I bought the two-pack half as a joke. Now 9:30 is the couch, both wraps on, fifteen minutes of the late news. He still sleeps down the hall most nights. But he's the one who gets the wraps out of the drawer.

Kickoff, my end of the couch
My wife ordered it after hearing about my shoulder one too many times. It goes on at kickoff on Monday nights, my end of the couch. Warmth, the strap snug around it, the hum under that. Fifteen minutes and it switches itself off, usually before the first quarter's done. I can hold the remote and a drink at the same time, which was the whole point. Now my wife wants to know when it's her turn.

Set it up before he arrived
My grandson set up my phone, my TV and the thermostat. This one I did on my own, in the armchair, before he even got here on Sunday. Strap over the shoulder, fasten it around me, press start, pick the warmth and the massage on the controller. I didn't have to call anybody. He looked a little disappointed, honestly.

The sheet said twice a day
My PT gave me a sheet of band exercises. Twice a day, it said. Real life said once, on a good day. I still see her and I still do the bands. What changed is the order: the wrap goes on at 7 in the kitchen chair, fifteen minutes, and the bands come straight after because I'm already sitting there with the sheet. It's the part of my evening I don't skip.

Laptop closes, wrap goes on
My right shoulder spends nine hours a day on a mouse. I close the laptop at 6, and the wrap goes on before I even get out of the desk chair. Fifteen minutes while I answer texts with my left hand. I tried a massage gun first, but it needs the other arm, which kind of defeats the purpose. This one stays put until it switches itself off.

Mornings the same, evenings rearranged
I still do my bra hooked in front and spun around, and a cardigan still takes me a minute. That's mornings. What changed is my evenings. After dinner the wrap goes on in the recliner: the warmth, the strap hugging my shoulder, the hum underneath, fifteen minutes while I scroll Facebook. Nobody has to help me put it on, and that matters to me more than I expected.

Arms up from 9 to 7
I'm a hairstylist. Arms up with a blow dryer from 9 in the morning to my last client at 7. I get home, kick off my shoes, and the wrap goes on before I start dinner. Fifteen minutes on the couch with my feet up. It's cordless, so I can still get up and stir the pot. A coworker borrowed it once and I had to go get it back.
